The bay area of the port is also home to Santa Cruz de Tenerife Royal Yacht Club (a recreational association soon to celebrate its hundredth anniversary), and in the building Edificio Puerto Ciudad Stella Maris, the offices of the non-governmental organization, Pastoral Diocesana del Mar, which provides social assistance to mariners and seafarers.
The port authority also focuses on educating young people about the significance of ports in this island society, and has consequently created a packed annual programme of school visits.
Finally, the location of the port means that it is surrounded by highly populated neighbourhoods that co-exist with port facilities. Collaboration between both parties is therefore crucial to ensure their well-being without affecting the socio-economic activity of maritime communications, which are vital for the islands.
