Puerto ciudad or the port and the city

The project for warehouses on the Muelle de Ribera or Embankment was designed by Miguel Pintor González in 1950. A single front, 150 m long, 20 m wide and 6.8 m high, overlooked the sea and was linked to Avenida Anaga by two bridges both 11 metres wide. Over the years, the area has been subjected to much remodelling, the most important undertaken in 1990.In 1992 the former warehouses and station were refurbished. The stand-like offices used by maritime transport companies were demolished and the former operations yard was annexed. The result, a modern building known as “Puerto-Ciudad” (port-city), was officially inaugurated on 30 April 1994 on the occasion of the V Centenary of the City and Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. These facilities were designed by architects Antonio Coronas Bosch, Arsenio Pérez Amaral and Eustaquio Martínez García.The Ciudad-Puerto Maritime Station houses offices for maritime companies, port operations and services and the Harbour Police. This maritime station accommodates inter-island and national passenger services. The Muelle Norte or North Quay The Muelle Norte Maritime Station is the work of local architects Arsenio Pérez Amaral, Eustaquio Martínez García and Antonio Coronas Bosch. Work began on 13 July 1988 and the building was officially inaugurated on 29 April 1991 (although operations had started on 15 April). This single-storey building is spread over 2,200 m2, of which 1,500 m2 are located beneath the platform. The remaining area comprises two symmetrical sections that jut out towards the edge of the quay, over a metal structure with a reinforced concrete base. This was the boarding and landing station for the jetfoil that connected Santa Cruz de Tenerife with Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Santa Cruz de La Palma Maritime Station

The current maritime station was built by incorporating the first of the existing platforms and locating the building underneath, which saved on structural works and reduced costs. For that purpose, one of the platforms was enclosed. The rectangular, single-storey metal structure houses the offices at the top. Ticket sales offices are located at the entrance closest to the city, and toilet facilities, a newspaper kiosk, bar and waiting room can be found in the central area.Construction began on this maritime station in 1999, and it was officially inaugurated in June 2000 in honour of the local festivities of the Bajada de la Virgen.Extension plans will follow a similar line of action, by incorporating the second platform and linking it to the other by means of a new inter-connecting building. The new single-storey platform, will house the Harbour Police Office, staff changing rooms and toilet facilities for users. The interconnecting building will be spread over two floors and will accommodate more offices for the port authority, concessionaires and port traffic control. The new section will be built over 873,48 m2 plus the 678 m2 of the inter-connecting building.Once extension works are terminated, Santa Cruz de La Palma Port will have a maritime station of nearly 1,700 m2. The board of directors of Santa Cruz de Tenerife Port Authority has agreed to award the tender for extension works on the maritime station at Santa Cruz de La Palma Port to the company FCC Construcción, S.A., to be completed in the space of 9 months, with a budget of 1,350,978.00 euro.

San Sebastián de La gomera Maritime Station

The initial project for San Sebastián de La Gomera Maritime Station was drawn up by architect Carlos Schwartz Pérez and approved on 2 March 1988, with a budget of 106 million pesetas. As a result of successive alterations and extensions to San Sebastián de La Gomera Port, in the coming months, the port authority will remodel and extend the current maritime station. The number of users, shipping companies and service firms has increased considerably within the port enclosure. Added to this are the monitoring plans of the ISPS protocol or code (ship and port facility security) that will in future require all persons and baggage to use the station as a point of entry and exit to/from La Gomera. Therefore, these enhancement and extension works will consist of adding a pedestrian corridor that will incorporate other features of the station and link up to a boarding gangway, thereby complying with international safety and security measures.Changing room and toilet facilities will also be added for port authority personnel, as well as checking-in and baggage reclaim systems. This extension will also include the creation of a pre-boarding hall for 375 persons plus the corresponding services. Finally, a room will be added for the maritime traffic control centre. La Estaca Maritime Station, El Hierro In 1949, a project was drawn up for a store and a house at La Estaca Port (on the island of El Hierro) in response to the need to provide accommodation for the harbour warden and storage for port operations. The building was erected where the quay had been widened, the only plot of land suitable for construction in the surrounding area. The ground floor was used for offices and storage, and the second floor was divided in two, one part serving as a dwelling for the warden and the other as a place of work. This cost of this initial two-storey building amounted to 363,196.66 pesetas and construction began in 1950.In 1991, Santa Cruz de Tenerife Port Authority carried out repair works on the dwelling and store in La Estaca. Proximity to the sea had caused important damage to the building, which required maintenance work, new lighting, carpentry and furnishings. The works took five months to complete and were budgeted at 13,457.393 pesetas. In 1992, a new building was erected at a cost of one million pesetas to improve services provided for port users. Several single-storey premises were erected at the entrance to the pier. One was used as a waiting room and cafeteria, and the other by port services and personnel. After the completion of extension and remodelling works to the port in 2005, Santa Cruz de Tenerife Port Authority decided to construct a new building of 2,333 m2, over four levels, housing a café, offices for shipping lines and port control and the Harbour Police.Erected at the start of the dock, the building complies with the ISPS Code (International Ship and Port Facility Security Code) and is located so as to facilitate access and circulation within the port. The back of the building, overlooking the dock, is where the general communication ramp for passenger arrivals will be located, providing direct access to the baggage reclaim area. The north side, facing the mountain, will be built over two floors and will contain offices for shipping lines, the Harbour Police, check-in and offices for the terminal itself. And the south-facing side will house the café, which will be linked to the rest of the building by a gangway. The contract for the new maritime station for La Estaca Port was awarded to Constructora Herreña Fronpeca during a board meeting held on 8 November 2007, with a budget of 2,812,851 euro. The facilities should be ready for the forthcoming festivities of the Bajada de la Virgen de los Reyes in 2009.

Los Cristianos Maritime Station

In August 1987, architect Carlos A. Schwartz presented a project to Santa Cruz de Tenerife Port Authority for the construction of a Travellers’ Station in Los Cristianos Port. The project was commissioned by Engineering Director Bertín de Pozo Mozo. The building was located near the southeast tip of the quay, opposite the mooring berth for the ferry covering the service from Los Cristianos to San Sebastián de La Gomera. The plan included two offices for shipping agents with ticket sales offices, six premises for shops, a baggage store, an area for the police, a VIP hall, café and service areas, as well as a kitchen, staff changing rooms and stores. The two-storey building had two separate areas on the ground floor. The area nearest the main passenger entrance housed two offices for shipping agents, including a work area with a counter for ticket sales, a manager’s office and archive.Service areas are located at the southeast end of the building: stores, staff changing rooms, an area for centralizing all facilities, a cleaners’ room, a stairway to the kitchen on the first floor, an office for the police and an area reserved for future expansion. The southwest front of the first floor houses the following service areas: kitchen, store and toilet facilities for the general public and the authorities. The remaining ground-floor rooms overlook the beach and the town of Los Cristianos. Both ends of the building have an open-air terrace, linked by a corridor that runs across the front, which would permit boarding and landing from this level if future decisions mean that ships will be accessed from above quay level.
