A modern centre for marketing fish has existed in Santa Cruz de Tenerife Port since 2006, receiving authorization to function as a first point of sale in 2008.
The old building was completely refurbished in order to comply with the sector’s organizational, functional and normative requirements within the port. The new building is divided into two sections: on the eastern side, an existing area measuring 80 x 30 m was respected and now houses on one floor sellers stands and refrigeration; and the existing construction in the remaining 20 x 30 m was replaced by a two-storey metal-structure building that now includes a café, toilet facilities, offices and a reception store for lorries delivering fish. The second floor contains 14 offices in an area of 517 m2.
Improvements were also made to refrigeration, water and power installations, and external improvements included the addition of loading bays and a new roof.
The building contains 16 stands for the sale of fresh and frozen fish, which are currently occupied to around 60% of their capacity. The port authority issues authorizations to firms interested in marketing fish, although the facilities are managed and coordinated by EULEN S.A.
The building also has its own ice factory, cold chambers and freezing rooms fitted with centralized digital temperature control. Additional cold rooms are used for storing and cleaning fish.
Over 3 million euro—50% subsidized with funds from the Financial Instrument for Fisheries Guidance (FIFG)—have been invested in the new fish marketing centre.
