Santa Cruz de Tenerife Port Authority prioritizes continuous improvement of environmental behaviour in the interests of sustainable development, and is aware that port activities may have an impact on the environment.
Santa Cruz Port Authority is fully aware of its social responsibility to protect the environment and the natural surroundings in which port activities are carried out, while bearing in mind the need to provide competitive services tailored to customers. Following the approval of its environmental policy, the authority now aims to become actively involved in satisfying the following in the best possible way:
- Complying with pertinent environmental legal requirements.
- Preventing pollution by adopting best practices for operations and clean technologies that are economically viable.
- Developing an Environmental Management System, as part of a Global Management System, which will help identify important environmental aspects and minimize adverse environmental impact by establishing and complying with objectives and targets, leading to continuous environmental improvement.
- Providing suitable training and increasing awareness among personnel, thus enhancing the development of the policy in hand and respect for the environment.
- Diffusing this Environmental Policy, which will be made available to all individuals or organizations that request it.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife Port Authority fully accepts it responsibilities towards the environment and therefore subscribes to and obeys the provisions set down in the following: Royal Decree 253/2004, of 13 February, which establishes prevention measures to guard against pollution in operations involving loading, unloading and handling of hydrocarbons in maritime and port surroundings; Royal Decree 210/2004, of 6 February, which establishes a system of follow-up and information about maritime traffic; Royal Decree 1196/2003, of 19 September, which approves basic guidelines for civil protection for control and planning in the event of the risk of serious accidents involving hazardous substances; Order FOM/605/2004, of 27 February, concerning the professional competency of safety officers for the transport of hazardous goods by road, rail or waterway; Law 29/2003, of 8 October, concerning the improvement of conditions of competence and safety in the market in the carriage of goods by road, which partially amends Law 16/1987, of 30 July, basic law on inland transport; the MSC/Circ.1025 17 July 2002 / CARRIAGE OF DANGEROUS GOODS / INTERNATIONAL MARITIME DANGEROUS GOODS (IMDG) CODE /ANNEXES AND SUPPLEMENTS; Commission Regulation (EC) no. 2003/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council, of 13 October 2003 relating to fertilizers; Royal Decree 430/2004, of 12 March, which establishes new rules about limiting emissions of certain pollutants from large combustion plants into the atmosphere, and which sets certain conditions for controlling atmospheric emissions from oil refineries; and Royal Decree 995/2003, of 25 July, which establishes harmonization procedures and requirements for loading and unloading operations from bulk carriers.
In this way, and in accordance with prevailing national legislation in this matter, Santa Cruz de Tenerife Port Authority, together with its individual employees, is committed to supporting this Environmental Policy and is fully aware of the need for prevention.
Reports containing a review of environmental actions will be published periodically. These reports will be distributed throughout the entire organization along with the aforementioned environmental objectives, and will be made available to all individuals and organizations that request them.
