Processing industry activities and facilities give ports significant added value. The presence of the refinery in Santa Cruz de Tenerife Port in particular gives it a certain edge over other ports in the area, while underpinning its important strategic location.

Processing and commercializing chemical products is another activity at a facility traditionally considered as a mid-Atlantic supply point.

The Refinery

Tenerife refinery has been active since November 1930, a year after the founding of the Compañía Española de Petróleos (Spanish Petroleum Corporation). Its location in the Canaries is a result of the 1927 Law of Petroleum Monopoly, which forbade the installation of privately-owned oil industries in mainland Spain. The magnificent geographical location and specific conditions offered by the island of Tenerife meant that it was chosen as the site for the first refinery to be built in Spain.
