We hear about Blockchain, Big Data, AI, IoT and all kind of technical words from the world of innovation that are swamping us until relatively recently, and we ask ourselves: Will all this apply in ports?, How do we do it?, How do we put this into practice?
It is normal to look at our fellows from other ports to see who dared to make the first move or approach container terminals to encourage them to venture into some prototype. However, innovation on ports needs to come from the port authorities themselves. We need to be the hub of producing innovative measures, which port operators and the port itself benefit from. The government agency Puertos del Estado has understood this by implementing the Port 4.0 Fund, endowed with over EUR 20 million, for the establishment of start-ups’ incubators or accelerators in the port sector.
